2) Special Guest Lecture on "Spatial-temporal dynamics of flood resilience in the Mekong River Basin" by Dr. Liang Emlyn Yang
Email sent from the Director, Office of Academic Administration on 20 August 2025

The Department of Development and Sustainability (DDS) is pleased to extend an invitation to you all to join the Special Guest Lecture on "Spatial-temporal dynamics of flood resilience in the Mekong River Basin" by  Dr. Liang Emlyn Yang, Department of Geography, Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) of Munich, Germany, and John A Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS), Harvard University, Cambridge 02138, MA , USA.

Date: Tuesday, 26th August 2025
Time: 14.00  - 15.00hrs.
Venue: S101, Serd Building

Abstract:
Most flood-related research emphasizes risks, losses, and vulnerabilities, often portraying communities as victims of disaster. However, this narrow focus overlooks the crucial question of how communities actively maintain resilience in flood-prone  environments. The ERC-funded STORIES project places community resilience at the center of its investigation, using the Mekong River Basin as a key case where millions of people have long lived with seasonal floods. Our research explores how communities develop resilience by building elevated homes, adapting agricultural calendars, and engaging in community-based water governance. We combine historical analysis, field-based case studies, and agent-based modeling to trace how these security strategies have evolved over time and space. The Mekong’s flood resilience is not just technical or economic—it is deeply rooted in social networks, trust, cultural identity, and institutional arrangements that support mutual aid and risk sharing. Community security, in this context, means more than protection from immediate harm; it reflects a capacity to adapt, preserve autonomy, and maintain a sense of continuity amid environmental uncertainty. By foregrounding community resilience, the shift in perspective—from managing disaster impacts to enhancing community resilience —provides a more just and sustainable foundation for climate adaptation in the Mekong and beyond.

Keywords: Flood resilience, community resilience, flood adaptation, resilience

Greetings from the DRSD 2025 Secretariat for the upcoming 4th International Symposium on Disaster Resilience and Sustainable Development (DRSD 2025), organized by the Disaster Preparedness, Mitigation and Management (DPMM) program at AIT.

The symposium will be held at the AIT Conference Center from 24–26 November 2025, and aims to bring together global experts, practitioners, and scholars to share knowledge and collaborate on advancing innovative solutions for disaster resilience and sustainable development.

On behalf of the DRSD 2025 Organizing Committee, we kindly invite the wider AIT community including students, faculty, staff, and adjunct faculty to the Symposium. We believe this event is highly relevant to the AIT community particularly those engaged in areas such as disaster risk reduction, climate resilience, sustainable development, humanitarian response, early warning systems, nature-based solutions, and the role of technology and governance in building resilient societies.

Attached to this email are the General Invitation Letter and the official event brochure for your reference and circulation.

Abstract submission and participant registration are currently open via our website:
